An updated airport layout plan for the Grand Haven Memorial Airport is laying out many possibilities for the future of the Grand Haven facility.
“Technically, what is going on is the FAA is mandating that we have a 10-year airport layout plan,” City Transportation Director Tom Manderscheid said.
According to Manderscheid, the layout plan is still in draft form and has not been accepted for approval by the FAA.
“They have the plan now and they’ve looked at it for six months now,” he said.
Once approved, the updated plan includes both short-term and long-range goals for the airport. Among these is improvement to the terminal facilities.
“We want to obviously do an expansion of the terminal building,” Manderscheid said of the nearly 1,400 square foot building. “The reason we’re doing that is because we have so many organizations using the airport property.”
Preliminary plans call for a 1,500 square foot addition to the building, with the inclusion of Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant bathrooms, a meeting area and a small kitchenette.
Manderscheid said that the expansion would not only be for pilots and organizations such as the Experimental Aircraft Association utilizing the airport, but also other community groups wanting to rent and utilize the space.
“Our main goal of the board and the city is to make our residents more educated that there is an airport, and we’re certainly would like to see greater use of the facility,” Manderscheid said.

So if the Federal Government picks up 95% of the tab, it's okay then? What about the people of Grand Haven, did we forget about them. Shouldn't they have a say in this decision?
